Introduction
The game is titled Qin Neng Bu Zhuo, with the English name Handy Dandy Hanky Panky.
It is a cultural promotion game created for the Humble Administrator’s Garden in Suzhou, China, aiming to raise public awareness of cultural heritage protection and conservation by using interactive gameplay as a medium.
The project was completed by a three-member studio founded by myself, named “woke.”
The studio’s slogan is:
“Visit the cottage three times to uncover the hidden Wolong; stimulate the imagination nine times and awaken the woke.”
In this project, I was responsible for game design, sound design, and programming.
I also served as the project initiator and team leader.
Main Discussion
All character animations were hand-drawn frame by frame, and multiple sets of classical outfits matching each character’s design were created. The environments are modeled after traditional Jiangnan water towns in China, while the monsters are inspired by various traditional artifacts housed in the Suzhou Museum, such as the Mise porcelain lotus bowl and the Late Shang Dynasty Zilong Ding.
Key Takeaways
This game was created using tile sets in Unreal Engine, with all the scenes drawn in a hand-painted traditional ink style. Players take on the role of a cultural relic restorer and can choose freely between two paths—literary or martial—to complete the restoration of artifacts. They can either battle monsters incarnated from broken relics or “restore the artifacts” by solving puzzles.
